excerpt from kyle’s STORY:

I consider the statement, soak it in like a sponge. The woman’s words simultaneously astound and resonate. This house. This place. This “loudness.” All so strange to me. I remember everything and yet I remember nothing, my mind caught in a tidal pool of unfamiliar but understood residue. Perhaps I know this woman. Perhaps I don’t. Perhaps she could be of some help. Perhaps . . . she’s the wolf?

The woman stares at me expectantly. I look away, searching for a response amidst the dying glow of my pipe’s dottle. Saving me from action are the hurried steps and startled gasps of fellow partygoers.

BOOM! BOOM!

Frantic, I turn to re-enter the house but am stopped by my newfound acquaintance.

“Don’t fret, darling,” she says, lacking the earnestness of her previous verbal offerings. “I don’t believe those are for us.”

The woman motions over to the balcony. I approach the railing, joining the gathering of my captivated partygoers as an organ drones somewhere in the dark. I see nothing at first, my eyes ignorant to the night’s offerings, then . . . I see it.
